Experienced & Practical, nothing mamby pamby

I’m a Clinical Child Psychologist specialising in Child and Adolescent Psychology. I see children, teenagers and parents, usually referred by GP’s, Paediatricians and schools, and a lot by word of mouth.  In 20 years, I’ve had over 20,000 appointments, focusing on children’s emotional and behavioural problems – that amounts to a lot of experience. Problems can range from mild to severe. From annoying sibling rivalry to kids threatening parents with knives, ten-year-old’s with toileting issues, twelve-year-old’s still sleeping in mum’s bed. The most common problem I see? Children refusing to do as they’re told, because ‘they’re their own boss’, and “you can’t tell me what to do!”

I have helped children that are adopted, have single parents/same sex-parents, children that are grieving, intellectually gifted, or traumatised. Children raised by grandparents, uncles and aunties, and children with ASD, ADHD, ODD, OCD, APD, SID. I am an Expert Witness in the Family Court of Australia and the Federal Magistrates Court.  I’ve worked alongside psychologists, psychiatrists, GPs, paediatricians, social workers, mental health nurses, OT’s and speech pathologists. I’m now in private practice, and all I do is help children and teenagers with emotional and behavioural issues.

I am also a parent of two children, both now adults. Parents often feel bad asking this question, but it’s a good question to ask. Nothing puts it in perspective like being a parent.

By telling you this, I hope you will have some confidence in my experience.

If you’re a parent and you’ve tried it all before and nothing has worked, and now you’re feeling completely exhausted, frustrated, unsupported and undermined, try not to worry, you’re not alone, and it’s probably not your fault. It’s all about getting the right advice that fits your family. I think parents are sick and tired of the warm fuzzy mamby pamby parenting advice that is impossible to implement and not very effective anyway. Parents need sensible, practical, straight forward advice to help their children cope better in the world.
